Heat Pillow - Find it. Love it. Buy it.

Knowing what to look for in your heat pillow will help you find the bedroom pillow of your dreams. Follow these tips and get exactly what you need.

Deciding Between Heat Pillow Fillings

Some buckwheat hull pillows claim you can place them in the microwave. Be very cautious. If you do decide to try it, do not leave a pillow in the microwave for more than 30 seconds at a time. One person microwaved a buckwheat pillow for a couple of minutes, brought it to bed. A short while later the mattress and pillow caught on fire because the buckwheat hulls had overheated.

Flax seed pillows are preferred for microwaving. The oils within the seed respond well to heating. Place them in the microwave for a minute and the seeds stay warm for half an hour.

Battery operated or plug in heat pillows use an interior heating pad. Often these bedroom pillows have wires that you may feel when you lay on them. Some people find them to be uncomfortable. You should also never use the pillows while you sleep. Make sure they are turned off and unplugged before going to bed.

Size Matters

Heated pillows come in a variety of sizes. If you are using a pillow to sleep on, you'll need a larger size. If you use your heat pillow to soothe menstrual cramps, muscle aches or a stiff neck, a small pillow should suffice.

Keeping the Bed Pillow Clean

Most pillows are spot clean only. Flax seed heat pillows and buckwheat pillows should not be washed. Getting water on the seeds or hulls may cause mold and mildew to grow.

Use a washable protective cover on your pillow for easy cleaning. Many come with zippered covers that are machine washable.

Is Aromatherapy for You

Filling a pillow with dried lavender blossoms repels many insects. Lavender essential oils are also known to calm and soothe a person. If you find yourself stressed, a heat pillow with lavender is extremely relaxing.

Peppermint herbal heat pillows also help relax and soothe the senses. You'll find many natural product stores offer a choice of lavender or peppermint.

Consumer Ratings

Take time to read user reviews on the various web sites. You often get unbiased reviews that will answer your questions and help you decide if a specific heat pillow is going to meet your expectations.
