It is unfortunate, but in today's indoor, climate controlled environments, even the greenest thumb can not always get healthy growth from a real plant. But still there are many areas in our home or office that need the aesthetic beauty of greenery.

It has been proven that people just feel more relaxed in the natural setting of plants and flowers. And it doesn't take a dozen silk hanging baskets to make a real difference. Just one elegant draping ivy will add softness and elegance to any room.

Additionally, lovely silk hanging baskets are virtually maintenance free. They require no upkeep at all - no sunlight, no water or humidity and no food. Yet they look so life-like that they will astound you. Additionally, you don't need to give up valuable floor, shelf or table space for a silk hanging plant as you would for a regular potted plant.

What to look for in a silk plant

When buying your silk plant, pay attention to the fullness of the greenery, number of leaves, flowers, buds, or whatever the case may be. Go ahead and feel it. Is the material soft, supple and without flaws? Most importantly get close to it. If it still looks real to you, than it is a winner.

How to care for a silk plant

Your silk hanging basket will look beautiful for years with very little attention. Most importantly, keep it out of direct sunlight that will fade leaves and flowers. In time everything collects a little dust. If you notice dust on your leaves, cleaning is quick and easy. If you can easily remove the plant from the basket, do this before cleaning. Place approximately one cup of table salt in a large paper grocery bag. Depending on the size of the plant, you may need more or less. Then gently place your plant inside the paper bag, roll the top down a couple of times and then shake the bag. The salt works as an abrasive and will gently scrub the dust from the petals and leaves. Gently shake the plant a bit as you take it out of the paper bag to remove any excess salt. Then save the bag of salt for another time. It should last for several cleanings. For a quick fix, pull out the blow dryer. Just a few bursts of cool air will remove light dust.
