* Overview To Treatment Areas. Hair loss treatment involves the use of drugs or products designed specifically for treating hair loss. The mechanism by which the hair loss treatments work fall into one or more of the following categories.

* Hormones And Natural Hair Loss Treatment. DHT blockers work to hinder the binding of testosterone and the enzyme 5-alpha reductase which in turn keeps the level of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the body normal.

Hair Loss Treatment

When DHT attaches to the receptors of the hair follicle, damage is done by shrinking the hair follicle to the point where hair growth is retarded and eventually stopped.

DHT is a significant factor in the hair loss of both men and women. It is believed that the genetic trait for hair loss somehow makes hair follicles more susceptible to DHT.

* Male Hair Loss Treatments. Propecia (finasteride) is an FDA approved hair loss treatment for male pattern baldness. (Propecia is not recommended for pregnant women). Propecia is a tablet which if taken daily blocks the formation of DHT and therefore reduces the rate of hair loss. Since DHT blockers, like Propecia, work internally there are possible side effects like loss of libido.

* Short Science Lesson - Causes Of Hair Loss. Topical antiandrogen applications help stop DHT from binding onto the sebaceous gland receptors which result in damage to the hair follicle.

The DHT receptors are clustered at the top of the head, which is why there is significantly less hair loss on the side of the head. Since the antiandrogens are applied topically as an external application, they do not systemically affect levels of testosterone in the body.

In order for the antiandrogen application to be effective it must be strong enough to compete with the body's DHT. There is a hair loss treatment product Spironolactone that is applied topically with minoxidil solutions for both men and women.

Super oxide dismutase (SOD) reduces the amount of super oxide in the body, which becomes elevated as an immunological response to excessive DHT in the hair follicle.

The body's cells treat DHT in the hair follicle as a foreign substance that needs to be attacked. In response, the cells release super oxide to fight off the invading substance. The SOD's reduce the super oxide allowing the body to re-accept the natural hair follicle.

There is an FDA approved (1996) hair loss treatment drug, 1amin that acts as a copper binding peptide, which reduces the amount of super oxide in the body. 1amin was originally approved as an anti-inflammatory gel and the product does have an anti-inflammatory effect on the scalp. People have also reported that 1amin acts as a stimulant with new hair growth being experienced or at least the strengthening of existing hair.

* Growth Stimulators - New Hair Loss Treatment. Growth stimulators encourage hair growth artificially without actually working on the underlying hair loss cause.

It is unclear exactly how topical growth stimulators work as hair loss treatments, but there is evidence that some of the growth stimulators help to accelerate the hair follicle from its resting stage (telogen) to its active phase (advanced anagen).

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is an FDA approved hair loss treatment, which is applied topically to activate follicular cells and thereby has been proven to stimulate hair growth.
