Wicker Porch or Patio Swing - Garden and Yard Swings

Your wicker porch swing will last years if you perform a little upkeep. Wicker is prone to mildewing, especially in humid climates. Wicker also deteriorates if exposed to sun, rain and dew. If you leave your wicker furniture in an area where rain and sun reach it, coat it with a marine grade stain or paint. You may need to touch-up the paint to ensure its protective quality.

Wicker’s Many Forms

Wicker refers to any plant material cut into thin strips and woven to form a strong seating surface. Wicker usually involves one of four plants: bamboo, rattan, reed or willow.

Bamboo and rattan are the two more popular options. Bamboo is strong, but requires special care. It shouldn’t get too wet or rotting will occur. Bamboo wicker porch swings need a coating of wax to retain the wood’s natural luster

Find an Ideal Wicker Porch Swing Location

The best spot for a wicker porch swing is under a covered porch or deck. Three-season porches are best because the screening keeps out snow and rain. If you live in a windy area, purchase covers to protect your wicker porch swings.

Keep it Clean

Dust, dirt and pollen affect the finish of wicker. Outdoor wicker porch swings should be dusted or vacuumed monthly. Use a vacuum brush to get into narrow areas. Once a year, use a mixture of water and a mild detergent and wipe down the entire swing. Use a towel to dry it off. If water seeps into the wicker strips, they will wear prematurely.

During months where the pollen count is high, clean the wicker porch swing more frequently. Pollen can stain and will wear away at the porch swing’s finish.

Never Use a Damp Wicker Porch Swing

If you sit on damp wicker furniture, you will stretch or break the wicker strands. Always allow the chair to dry thoroughly, for at least 48 hours, before using. You can speed this process with a hairdryer or by placing the chair in a sunny location.

Yearly Touch-Ups

Every year, it’s advisable to recoat the wicker porch swing with a coat of waterproofing sealant. Make sure you coat every surface. Allow to dry for a week before the wicker porch swing is used.
