Brush Cutter or Trimmer - Electric and Gas
Discover how a brush cutter and brush trimmer help clear your yard of saplings, vines and thick weeds in little time. Unlike grass trimmers, a gas or electric brush cutter has a sturdier blade designed for fields and wooded areas.
Even in the open, birds that eat wild grapes or tree fruit will create droppings containing seeds. Many of these seeds make their way into the soil where they grow. Soon, you'll have wild grape vines and a variety of saplings growing in your gardens, under trees and other areas of your yard.
You can pull them by hand or by digging them out with a shovel, but you can save effort by using a brush cutter or brush trimmer. A gas brush cutter or electric brush trimmer tackle these hard-to-remove plants in a matter of seconds. Simply move the remains to a fire pit or compost pile and your yard looks great.
Forms of Brush Cutters and Brush Trimmers
You'll generally have two options available at your small equipment or lawn and garden store. Some brush cutters come on wheels and work like a lawn mower. You push the brush cutter around your yard clearing fields in record time.
The other form resembles a grass trimmer, but has a sturdier blade or extra-thick string instead of the traditional spool of string that comes on a grass trimmer. The blade or extra-thick string power through small trees, thick vines and tough weeds.
Electric Brush Trimmer or a Gas Powered Brushcutter
Both walk-behind heavy-duty brush cutter and hand-held brush trimmers allow you to choose between electric-powered or gas-powered models. There are clear benefits to both.
For optimal cutting, the more power behind the engine, the cleaner the cut. For that reason, most people prefer a gas powered brush cutter. Electric brush cutters will still cut thick stalks, but the cut may not be as clean. For some, this really doesn't matter, but if you do insist on a clean cut, consider gas powered.
Gas powered brushcutters do require you to maintain the engine. Make sure you're up to cleaning and replacing spark plugs, checking fuel levels, flushing out fuel/oil tanks with clean fuel and oil and inspecting or replacing air filters.
Electric powered brush cutters eliminate much of your yearly maintenance. The biggest hurdle you'll face is removing dirt and vegetation before storing the brush trimmer. You are limited by the length of your power cord or the rechargeable battery's life. If you have a lot of area to clear, your battery is not likely to last for the entire job. And if your yard is spacious, it's unlikely you'll want drag numerous extension cords behind you to reach all areas of your yard.
