Laws Regarding Gap Year Australia or New Zealand Travel

Authorities in Australia highly recommend leaving a copy of your itinerary with local authorities, friends, family or the hotel/hostel where you are staying. This is especially important if any of your gap year Australia travels involve backpacking in remote areas. If plans change, contact everyone holding your intinerary. This way, if you do go missing, authorities have up-to-the-minute information that can help them organize a search.

You can use your foreign drivers license for a total of three months in Australia and twelve months in New Zealand. If your gap year travel is longer than three months, you will need to apply for a local drivers license. Seatbelts are mandatory.

Pay close attention to quarantine laws regarding foods in both Australia and New Zealand. You must declare any food item you are carrying when you enter the overseas country. If you fail to declare an item and it is found in your baggage or on your person, stiff fines will be handed down.

New Zealand requires work permits for anyone traveling abroad for work. Before leaving your country, you should check with your government to find out about having the proper documentation in hand.
