Student Gap Year Teaching - Jobs and Work Experience as Conversation Assistant

Spend a year in Spain as a gap year teaching/conversation assistant. Gap year teaching assistants earn a small monthly stipend, usually around $130. Conversation assistants live with a Spanish host family and enjoy making friends and enjoying local food and customs.

CAPS (Conversation Assistant Program for Schools) works a lot like an au pair program. The difference is that instead of watching the host family's child/children at home, you accompany them to their school. In the school setting, you speak English, helping children with their Spanish to English translations.

CAPS Program Details

Gap year conversation assistant teaching programs run from September to June, the same as an average school year. You are required to pay for your transportation to and from Spain. The host family provides you with breakfast and dinner, lunches you receive at the school where you work as a conversation assistant.

You are in the school setting for 25 hours a week helping children up to the age of 16 with the English language. It's important that you dress appropriately and behave as a teacher is expected. Gap year teaching/conversation assistants handle many of the following tasks in the school setting.

  • Assist in language labs and A/V rooms
  • Creating class discussions in English
  • Help the teacher give oral exams
  • Prepare English language displays and reading materials
  • Share their own cultures and history
  • Teach and play English games

The gap year teaching company provides you with tutors to help you learn Spanish and assistants who will help you get set up in Spain. They'll assist you as you get set up with a local bank, medical coverage and other important tasks.

Once you're in Spain and settled in with your new family, you are matched with a tutor who helps you learn the Spanish language. The host family has one child who attends the school where you will spend your gap year teaching.
