Scopes come in different shapes and sizes for different uses and include:
- Gun scopes for handguns and shotguns
- Riflescopes for hunting and target rifles as well as military and law enforcement use
- Spotting scopes (terrestrial telescopes)
- Night vision scopes
Scopes for shooting sports are of a weight and size appropriate for mounting on a weapon. They have features to enable mounting, and they have some type of reticle, either a traditional crosshair-type grid or a light that illuminates the target with a small red dot.
Spotting scopes provide high magnification and large light gathering capacity for situations where binoculars just can't get you close enough. Night vision scopes use image intensifier technology combined with an infrared source for lighting up the target.
