AKC Pet Health Insurance - Vet Insurance for Pets
Markel Insurance Company underwrites AKC pet health insurance plans. Unlike leading pet health insurance companies, the AKC Pet HealthCare plan charges the same premium regardless of breed. Offered for both cats and dogs, there are five levels of medical pet insurance from which you can choose. Add a wellness rider to cover vaccinations, flea and heartworm medications and yearly exams.
AKC pet health insurance is available in all fifty United States. You can pay monthly or save a bundle and pay your yearly premium in one lump sum.
Five AKC Pet Health Insurance Plans
AKC pet health insurance plan choices include:
- Accident Plus
- Essential
- Essential Plus
- Wellness
- Wellness Plus
Accident Plus is the base level of veterinary health insurance. It covers surgeries, prescriptions, diagnostic tests, X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, hospitalization and visits with specialists. There is a limit of $8,000 per year and a $2,000 maximum limit per incident. Expect a $75 deductible and 90 percent coverage on covered veterinary expenses.
The next level up is called Essential. This level provides the same coverage found with Accident Plus but adds cancer coverage. Limits are change to a $11,000 maximum per year and the maximum per incident drops to $1,500. The deductible with Essential is $125. Essential Plus is very similar only the maximum per incident increases to $3,000.
Wellness and Wellness Plus are almost identical. The plans cover all items from the lesser levels, but adds preventative care. Yearly exams, vaccinations, boosters, heartworm tests, de-worming, flea and tick control and dental care are all covered. Wellness Plus also covers a spay/neuter procedure. Limits with the two Wellness plans include a $13,000 per policy and $5,000 per incident limit. Both policies feature a $125 deductible and cover 80 percent of your veterinary bills.
Age Restrictions with AKC Pet Health Insurance
On any AKC pet health insurance plan, the pet must be less than nine years of age at the time you apply for coverage. Free trials are only available on puppies over eight weeks or cats older than 10 weeks.
