ASPCA Pet Health Insurance - Vet Insurance for Pets
ASPCA pet insurance policies begin at $7.50 (2011 prices) a month. Purchase coverage that pays for emergency care or add riders that cover everything from spay/neuter procedures to yearly check-ups. Underwritten by the U.S. Fire Insurance Company and administered by a division of the Hartford Group, Inc. these pet health insurance policies come highly recommended by many veterinary offices.
Benefits to ASPCA Pet Insurance
All ASPCA pet insurance policies provide 80 percent coverage on covered procedures, tests and medications. You'll pay your veterinarian and then fax or mail the claim form with a copy of the vet bill. ASPCA will go through the bill to determine which charges are covered under your specific policy and cut a check.
You needn't worry about having to choose a new veterinarian. The ASPCA pet insurance company allows you to go to any licensed veterinarian for your pet's care.
All veterinary health insurance policies offer $100 yearly deductibles. Your out-of-pocket deductible is much lower than competing pet insurance companies. In addition, ASPCA keeps “per incident” limits to a minimum unlike other companies.
If you have more than one dog or cat, you're entitled to a 10 percent policy discount. You can save a lot of money by insuring all of your pets at one time. This discount is not offered on Level One policies.
A portion of all ASPCA pet insurance premiums goes directly to the ASPCA to help communities protect animals of all ages.
Four Levels of Medical Pet Insurance Coverage
ASPCA pet insurance coverage depends on the level of protection you've purchased. Level One is basic and only covers testing or procedures that occur as the result of an accident. X-rays, surgeries and hospitalization are covered with this level.
Level Two policies cover the same as level one but add coverage if the testing or surgery is required due to an illness. With Level Three, you'll add spay/neuter surgeries, basic vaccinations and a yearly exam.
Level Four provides the most protection. In addition to everything provided with Level Three, you also gain coverage for flea and tick prevention, heartworm prevention, yearly dental cleanings and additional vaccinations.
All policies include maximum benefit limits. They are:
- Level One: $2,500 per incident and $8,000 per year
- Level Two: $1,500 per incident and $8,000 per year
- Level Three: $3,500 per incident and $11,000 per year
- Level Four: $5,000 per incident and $13,000 per year
Items Not Covered by ASPCA Pet Insurance
The ASPCA pet insurance policies do not cover everything you might encounter, though they do cover quite a bit. Things that are not covered include:
- Elective surgeries like declawing
- Experimental treatments
- Genetic disorders
- Pre-anesthesia for any reason other than dental cleanings
- Pre-existing conditions
- Pregnancy or breeding
- Prescription diets
- Shampoos and grooming supplies
- Vitamin and mineral supplements
In addition, nothing is covered until a 30-day waiting period passes from the time of your enrollment. If your pet swallows a foreign object, only one incident is covered per year. Your pet must have continued pet insurance coverage for a full year before cruciate ligament conditions are covered.
