Budget Pet Health Insurance - Best Value - Cheap Vet Insurance

Even on a tight budget, pet health insurance is easily obtained. Tricks to getting the best value include insuring your pet at an early age, shopping around and purchasing only the coverage your pet would ever need.

Cheap pet insurance is available from many veterinary health insurance companies. Don't feel that you must purchase the first policy you find, take the time to compare plans and rates before making a decision. Having more than one pet also saves you money because you get a group discount.

Look at the Comparisons Between Cheapest Pet Insurance Companies

Look at the sample rates procured using two different scenarios to see how different things really are. The scenarios used are:

  • Eight week old mixed breed puppy
  • Eight week old purebred black lab

Because medical pet insurance companies do not offer coverage for preexisting conditions, the dog's used in this comparison are considered ailment and disease free and have already been spayed or neutered. However, there are optional pet insurance riders that will cover the cost to have your pet fixed that will increase your premium.

Factors Affecting Medical Pet Insurance Premiums

Factors that weigh heavily in determining a budget pet health insurance quote are your area of residence. If there is a limited number of veterinarians in your area, prices may be higher because of the lack of competition. If a veterinary office lacks competition, they can set higher prices.

The breed also counts. Certain breeds are predisposed to costly medical conditions meaning their cost of veterinary care will be higher.

Differences in Prices Between Budget Pet Health Insurance Companies

Rates between males and females differ only if you plan to use the insurance to have the pet spayed or neutered. Spaying costs more than a simple neuter and therefore your veterinary bill will be much higher.

For the eight-week-old mixed breed puppy, Pet's Best budget pet insurance would cost $21.66 regardless of sex for a $100 deductible. Increase the deductible to $500 and the monthly pet insurance premium is $10.56. The purebred lab puppies' rates increase by almost $3. This is for emergency care only. If you want to add vaccination coverage, add $22.

VPI has different policy levels. For basic coverage plus vaccination and teeth cleanings, you'd be paying $37 a month on a purebred or mixed breed. There is no price difference between the two.

With the ASPCA's pet insurance coverage, basic pet insurance on a mixed breed or purebred puppy starts at $11 a month. Increase that monthly premium to $46.30 a month if you want vaccination coverage.
