Dog Pet Health Insurance - Vet Insurance for Dogs
The breed of dog you purchase affects the coverage your dog pet health insurance provides. Certain breeds cost more to insure because of their predisposition towards medical problems. Learn which dogs are higher risk and therefore will have much higher premiums or limited coverage.
While many pet insurance companies restrict coverage on conditions or diseases that are genetically prone to, they also base their prices on the possibility of an increased number of claims.
Large Breed Dogs
Not every large dog breed costs more to insure. However, large breed dogs that are prone to hip or leg injuries will. Even if the veterinary health insurance company does not cover your dog's genetic issue, that same issue might cause other problems that they have to cover. Therefore, the dog pet health insurance premium on these dogs is higher.
German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia. Few medical pet insurance companies will cover a required surgery. If the dog becomes obese while it is inactive, this puts a strain on the dog's heart and can lead to new troubles. Insurance companies know this and price their pet health insurance policies on these breeds accordingly.
Another reason why insurance on large dog breeds is more costly is because it costs more to treat a large dog. Larger doses of medication are needed before and after surgeries. Vaccination dosages are larger. X-rays can take longer because there is more area to cover. Spay and neuters cost more when a dog is bigger.
Rare Breeds of Dogs
Rare dog breeds require higher pet insurance premiums to get coverage. Costly breeds like English Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Irish Wolfhounds and Harlequin Great Danes generally cost more to purchase from a breeder. As a result, if a major health issue arises, pet owners are more likely to do everything they can to keep that dog alive. This costs the dog insurance company more money on procedures, tests and medications that they must cover.
Dog Breeds that are Cheaper to Insure
While mixed dogs are almost always inexpensive to insure, certain AKC breeds rarely become ill or develop genetic issues that require veterinary care. These breeds generally have low dog pet health insurance premiums. They include:
- Beagles
- Poodles (Standard size, not miniatures)
- Springer Spaniels
- Yorkshire terriers
