Get A Batting Glove For Improved Grip And At Bat Hitting Performance

Imagine facing a great knuckle ball hurler like Hoyt Wilhelm or an over-powering fast ball pitcher such as Roger Clemens with a bat that's slipping within your grip! You might as well kiss goodbye your at-bat hitting opportunity, and concede a strikeout "K" in the books or per haps a fluke hit. High quality performance oriented batting gloves give you a tacky dead-lock grip on your bat, thus ‘leveling the playing field' for batsmen.

  • Importance Of Right Fitting Batting Gloves. Consider batting gloves in the same way that you would custom gloves for driving or, say, golf. You want maximum dexterity, yet a thin profile material that will still give ‘feel' and feedback as you make ball contact. Batting gloves are sized from extra small at about 7 inches to XXL at about 12 inches. The best way to ensure a perfect fit in your batting glove is to actually measure your finger length, which you'll find lies somewhere between 3 ¼ inches to over 4 ½ inches. Apply these two core measurements and then home in on the right size. Your batting glove should have a relaxed palm size, without wrinkling, and your glove's finger length should allow you to easily bend at each digit without restriction.
  • Materials And Construction. Similar to the advances made in materials technologies now found in baseball uniforms, batting gloves are designed in a range of materials and/or materials blends. Specially treated tacky leathers make the best material for your batting glove palm and fingers. However, lower cost alternatives, especially the synthetic leather materials, should be considered since these same materials have emerged as ‘champions' from years of field tests both in baseball and biking. During warm summer months, you'll want a blend of sure-grip plus some ventilation, so a mesh backed panel gives you the best of both functions. Best closures are narrow back straps with Velcro tabs, allowing you to flexibly alter your fit based on the day's temperatures, and whether your hand has swollen due to heat and perspiration.
  • What To Avoid. Stay clear of any cheap ‘putative' batting glove where there are any seams across the palm or in locations along the fingers where you'll get points of resistance or rubbing. It doesn't take long during a typical hitting practice session either at the batting cage or with live pitching for a poorly designed glove to ‘misbehave' and become increasingly annoying. Rather than help your hitting, such a glove diminishes your performance.

Instead, stick with the market leaders such as Wilson, Under Armour, Franklin, Mizumo, Nike, Rawlings amongst the market leaders in terms of performance and value.
